The Deluge

Who needs hurricane season when Houston has the occasional deluge anyway?

I know on Saturday it was like the sky was falling, and it was even worse north of me.

But last night, the flood gates opened. It started around 4 a.m., and I don't think I slept much after it started, because the rain just came down in sheets and sheets. I'm not sure I've ever heard just rain be that loud. And I've experienced my share of tropical systems between living in south Florida and here. Of course, there was occasionally the bang of thunder, too.

According to the news (which I am only watching because the cast of Wicked performed on Katie Couric's last Today Show and I'm sitting around the house waiting for the cable guy to come) -- anyway, League City apparently got up to 3" of rain in 90 minutes! I'm glad I'm not commuting, apparently there are lanes on different parts of the highway with flooded lanes (including at least one near here). If this is the damage that can be done in a couple hours of rain, you can see how poorly designed Houston is to handle a real storm.

My mind is still on the musical, they performed a schmoopy song rather than one of the fun ones. No wonder people think they would never like a musical.

The rain has slowed to a drizzle as the line of storms has moved south, but apparently there is another line on its way.

On a topic of a future deluge, the city of Dallas is annoying me in advance. Houston had its minority of pundits that suggested we shouldn't accept New Orleans refugees. Despite that, most of the city pitched in to help out - even as it became clear that many would stay for up to a year or even become permanent residents of the city. I got the impression that the city of Houston never faltered in supplying and accomodating all that was asked of it and if it had, there would have been an outcry from Houstonians. (Though the city occasionally asked for more money to fund some social services and public schools to accomodate the increased load, hardly unfair.) What Dallas is saying is not the grumbling of a few annoying pundits, but the city itself is trying to shirk its humanitarian duty to plan to help Houstonians in need. This whole thing hits very close to home, because I really believe that one day major portions of this city (now the 4th largest in the country) will eventually be devistated by a hurricane. Its what happens when you build a city on a bayou at sea level. I never felt that way in Florida, despite the potential for devistation from hurricanes there, I had confidence (which I don't have here) the cities and the states were fairly equipped to handle it, despite having to evacuate a penisula -- plus, except for within a few miles of the coast, storm surge isn't the concern that it is here. Here, with a big hurricane, a storm surge could bury the entire city. Even a category 5 hurricane hit Miami (causing billions in damage, I don't want to minimize the impact) I think the city recovered comfortably - in fact, when we moved to Florida only weeks after the strike, things were already returning to normal. Compare that to New Orleans. I believe a hurricane hitting Houston would probably be more comparable to New Orleans than Miami.

Thanks for putting "the city of Dallas is annoying me" - much better than just Dallas is annoying me. :)
